Taipei senior driver licence renewal rate at 33%
Only a third of Taipei's older drivers have renewed or handed in their licences under a new rule, a sign the rollout is off to a slow start and may need to be made easier for the elderly.
- A new rule for senior drivers started at the end of May, but by the end of July only about a third of those notified in Taipei had renewed or given up their licence.
- Taipei's motor vehicle office notified nearly 26,000 people in June and July, with Da'an, Shilin and Neihu the biggest districts affected.
- Older residents say they still do not understand the rule, and renewal offices, health checks and classes are too few and too far away.
- Road safety advisers want more service points closer to where seniors live, arguing a well-meant rule should not turn into a burden.
- City officials told district offices to team up with the licence stations and bring the service into neighbourhoods so older people do not have to travel far.
Outlook: Expect more local renewal sites and classes in coming months, which should push the completion rate up.
