Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an shows little willingness to campaign for the TPP; Chin Hui-chu warns of losing "little grass" votes

The KMT is cooling on blue-white cooperation in Taipei, which could end up hurting Chiang Wan-an's own election prospects.

  • KMT Taipei chapter chairman Tai Hsi-chin stated that Chiang Wan-an will not campaign for individual Taiwan People's Party city council candidates and will attend only joint rallies — and the fewer such appearances the better, and the further from polling day the better.
  • KMT city councillor Chin Hui-chu said this kind of calculation will leave TPP supporters unhappy, and that swing voters will also find the KMT too petty.
  • She cautioned that many TPP supporters lean green politically, and that if the KMT takes too rigid a stance, those votes could shift to Puma Shen, the Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for Taipei mayor.
  • Contests for council-level seats are inherently sharply divided, but for the sake of the bigger picture in the year-end elections, the manner of cooperation still needs to be handled more smoothly.

Outlook: How the blue and white camps calibrate the scale of joint campaign appearances will be a key variable in the year-end Taipei mayoral and city council elections.
