New Taipei household income survey shows smallest rich-poor gap among Taiwan's six major cities
New Taipei families are earning more and the gap between rich and poor households there is the narrowest of Taiwan's six biggest cities — good news for the city's middle class.
- Average household disposable income in New Taipei hit NT$1.263 million last year, above the national average.
- The richest fifth of families earn 4.87 times what the poorest fifth earn, well below the national gap of 6.17 times.
- Household income has grown steadily for a decade, up about 25% since 2016.
- Per-person disposable income jumped more than 10% in a single year, and has risen about 50% over ten years.
- City officials credit the gains to years of courting investment and building up local industry, which created jobs.
Outlook: If job growth in the city holds up, New Taipei should keep pulling ahead of the national average on both income and equality.
