Kaohsiung marks five years of zero borrowing and NT$35.2 billion in debt reduction
Kaohsiung says it has cut debt for five straight years without new borrowing, a positive sign for the city's finances and for companies weighing investment there.
- The city has taken on no new borrowing since 2021 and has cut its debt by NT$35.2 billion.
- Private money pledged through public-private projects has passed NT$340 billion, the most of Taiwan's six big cities.
- Total industrial investment under Mayor Chen Chi-mai's six years in office tops NT$2.7 trillion.
- Chipmakers and tech names including TSMC, AMD, Winbond, Cisco and Merck have committed to plants along the city's tech corridor.
- The city's own revenue keeps growing and is projected to reach NT$145.7 billion by 2027, up from NT$98.5 billion in 2020.
Outlook: With chip-sector money still flowing in, Kaohsiung looks set to keep spending on public works without adding debt.
