A fierce house fire in Kaohsiung's Nanzi District killed one man and left his younger brother fighting for his life after they jumped from the third floor to escape the flames.

• The fire broke out around 8pm on Xiuqun Road, tearing through the second, third and fourth floors of a four-storey house with a metal rooftop addition.
• A 24-year-old man jumped from the third floor as the flames closed in, hit the ground hard and died later in hospital.
• His 22-year-old brother was pulled out with burns to his face and chest and remains in critical condition.
• Fire crews sent multiple units and dozens of firefighters, and had the blaze out by 9:27pm.

Outlook: Investigators are still working out what started the fire.
