Huang Shih-chieh Attacks Taoyuan City Government, Calls to "Change Taoyuan's Future Together"
With Taiwan's 2026 local elections entering the final 100 days, Huang Shih-chieh, the Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for Taoyuan mayor, has opened fire on all fronts, putting incumbent mayor Chang San-cheng on the defensive.
- Huang has travelled through all thirteen of Taoyuan's administrative districts holding forums and canvassing on the streets, campaigning chiefly on residents' dissatisfaction with the status quo.
- He has made TSMC's decision three years ago not to set up in Taoyuan his central grievance, saying residents lost a large number of job opportunities as a result and are left commuting to Taipei and Hsinchu.
- Healthcare is his second main battleground: with the National Tsing Hua University Taoyuan Hospital now confirmed as not going ahead, he argues Taoyuan needs a second medical centre to fill the gap in critical care and obstetric and paediatric services.
- Transport and childcare have also come under fire, with rail and sewerage works leaving commuters queueing up to an hour for a bus.
- With reports that TSMC may return to the third phase of the Longtan Science Park, he stresses that this time the opportunity must not be missed again.
Outlook: With 100 days left in the campaign, the contest for Taoyuan mayor will continue to centre on the two cards of TSMC investment and healthcare resources.
