Hsinchu kite festival car ban at fishing port eased after businesses object

Aug 21, 2026

Hsinchu City is loosening a car ban around its international kite festival after local shops complained the restriction was killing their business.

  • Cars are still barred from parking at Hsinchu Fishing Port during the August 29–30 festival, but the city has carved out exceptions.
  • The third parking lot will now open to cars so shoppers can reach the fish market, with shuttles running from the morning.
  • The first lot is reserved for disabled visitors and the second becomes a scooter-only area with about 4,000 spaces.
  • Free shuttle buses will run from Hsinchu train station and several outlying parking lots to keep traffic out of the port area.
  • Residents, fishermen, and vendors get separate arrangements for access and restocking.

Outlook: The city is betting the shuttle setup keeps crowds flowing into Nanliao without choking the roads, but shop owners will judge it by the weekend's takings.
