Etihad Airways in-flight announcement calls Taiwan "China Taiwan," drawing Taiwanese protest
Taiwan's foreign ministry has lodged a strong protest after an Etihad Airways flight described the island as part of China in a Chinese-language announcement, a fresh flashpoint in the long fight over Taiwan's status.
- A passenger flying from Abu Dhabi to Taipei said the English announcement welcomed travelers "back to Taiwan" while the Chinese version said "back to China Taiwan."
- The same announcement warned that the "Chinese government" would fine passengers who brought in meat products.
- Taiwan's foreign ministry said the island is a sovereign country and is not subordinate to the People's Republic of China.
- Taipei has ordered its Dubai office and the civil aviation authority to press Etihad's headquarters and its Taiwan representatives for a correction, an apology, and changes.
Outlook: Taiwan will keep pushing airlines to drop Beijing-preferred wording, but foreign carriers with big mainland China business rarely reverse course.
