Chinese research ship "Tongji" spotted near Taiwan's Xiaoliuqiu, tracked by coast guard
A Chinese survey ship has been shadowed and pushed away from waters off Taiwan, another sign of steady pressure around the island.
- The Chinese research vessel "Tongji" appeared late at night near Huayu in the Penghu islands, just outside Taiwan's restricted waters.
- Taiwan's coast guard sent the patrol ship "Lianjiang" to sail alongside it, crowd its course, and warn it off by radio.
- The ship was not towing or dropping any survey gear, but it kept moving through the area and is now heading southeast past Xiaoliuqiu.
- Taiwan says it will keep watching Chinese ships around the island and position patrol boats ahead of time.
Outlook: Expect more of these close-quarters shadowing operations as Chinese vessels keep testing the edges of Taiwan's waters.
