Chiayi police officer charged over fake traffic tickets, released on bail
A police officer in Chiayi County has been charged with faking traffic tickets to boost his performance numbers, in a case that dents public trust in Taiwan's traffic enforcement.
- The officer, surnamed Li, allegedly wrote fake violation tickets in the names of family and friends who had done nothing wrong.
- Prosecutors say the goal was to pad his traffic enforcement record; six people were named as suspects.
- Li was released on bail of NT$300,000, his wife on NT$100,000, and four relatives on NT$50,000 each.
- Li has served at the same police station since 2016 and was recently accepted into a police university program, where he is now training.
- His own police department called him a hard worker and said it was surprised by the case, pledging full cooperation with prosecutors.
Outlook: The investigation continues, and the department will decide later whether to move him out of his current post.
