Blue-white heavyweights gather at Taiwan's legislature for Lo Chih-chiang's history project launch

Aug 21, 2026

A film launch hosted by KMT lawmaker Lo Chih-chiang turned into a rare gathering of Taiwan's opposition leaders, and the friendly mood is a mild positive for blue-white cooperation heading into the next election cycle.

  • KMT chair Cheng Li-wun, TPP chair Huang Kuo-chang, Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an and media veteran Jaw Shaw-kong all showed up.
  • The guest list drew attention because several of them are in open friction: Cheng and Jaw clashed over the special arms budget, and Chiang's call to topple the cabinet got a cold shoulder from both parties.
  • The choreography said more than the speeches — Chiang spoke early and left before the others arrived, and Cheng and Huang also left soon after their remarks with little contact.
  • Han shook hands with caucus whip Fu Kun-chi, whose absence from a cross-party negotiation had recently made Han visibly angry, but refused to say whether they had patched things up.
  • The project itself pushes a Chinese cultural-heritage message, with Han warning that Taiwan's young people are losing that historical grounding and Cheng promising a KMT government would "restore the true record" of events like 228 and the White Terror.

Outlook: Expect more of these soft, symbolic joint appearances as the KMT and TPP test how far cooperation can go before hard policy fights resume.
