Two Taiwanese soldiers jailed for selling military secrets to Chinese group
A Taiwan court has handed heavy prison terms to two junior officers who sold state secrets to a Chinese influence group, a warning sign for Taiwan's military security.
- An army sergeant got ten years and four months; an air force sergeant got seven years.
- Both were deep in personal debt and were recruited by a Chinese united front group called the "Wolong Society."
- They filmed videos swearing loyalty to the group, and one handed classified material to a Chinese agent.
- Each was paid a few hundred thousand Taiwan dollars; the middleman who introduced them also got prison time.
- The court said the two betrayed a country that trained them, and stripped both of civil rights for five years.
Outlook: The ruling can still be appealed, and Taiwan is likely to keep tightening checks on soldiers with money problems as China keeps targeting them.
