Taoyuan mayoral race: Huang Shih-chieh attacks TSMC and hospital plans, city government responds
Taiwan's Taoyuan mayoral race heats up as the DPP challenger accuses the sitting mayor of failing to deliver on a TSMC expansion and a new hospital — bad news for Mayor Chang San-cheng if the attack sticks, but the city says both projects are moving.
- DPP candidate Huang Shih-chieh marked 100 days to the election by saying Mayor Chang San-cheng did not work hard enough to bring TSMC to Taoyuan or to build a new Tsing Hua University hospital there.
- The city government pushed back, saying the third phase of the Longtan science park is moving forward with central government backing and that TSMC is open to it.
- Land purchases and compensation for that science park site have already started early, the city says.
- On healthcare, the city says a municipal hospital has been approved and is now in real planning, not just talk.
- The city also questioned what Huang has actually delivered for Taoyuan in more than ten years in politics.
Outlook: Expect both sides to keep fighting over the TSMC expansion and hospital as the campaign runs toward the vote in about 100 days.
