Taiwanese brothers arrested for building fake investment websites used in scams
Two tech-savvy brothers in Taiwan have been arrested for building custom fake investment websites for an overseas scam ring, a case that cost victims more than NT$100 million.
- The brothers ran a legitimate side of the business, building apps for government offices and clinics, while quietly assembling an engineer team to serve the scammers.
- Over a year and a half they built 40 fake investment sites, most offering crypto or gold as the supposed investment, and made close to NT$10 million doing it.
- 282 people were tricked into putting money in, drawn by fake screens showing big profits.
- Police arrested five people in total, including testers, designers and engineers, and seized cash, laptops, phones and a cash-counting machine.
- The overseas scam ring paid the brothers through crypto dealers, which is how the money crossed borders quietly.
Outlook: The two brothers are being held in custody while prosecutors build a case on fraud, money laundering and organized crime charges.
