Taiwan sets Nov. 28 local elections for 11,051 offices
Taiwan will pick more than 11,000 local officials on Nov. 28, a routine but massive test of the island's democracy at a moment of heavy pressure from China.
- Nearly 20 million people can vote, including 600,000 first-time voters.
- The vote covers mayors, county chiefs, councilors and other local posts across more than 8,900 districts.
- About 250,000 workers will run 18,244 polling stations, and over 300,000 if referendums are added.
- Three referendum proposals passed by lawmakers are still in limbo; the election commission pushed its review back to late August.
- If referendums ride along with the vote, counting could drag past midnight.
Outlook: The decision on whether referendums join the ballot lands in late August, and the campaign will double as a read on the ruling party's standing before 2028.
