Nun jailed for beating temple volunteer with donation box in Nantou
A Buddhist nun in Taiwan was sentenced to three months in prison for attacking a temple volunteer with her donation box — a bad outcome for her, and her second such conviction in about a year.
- A 73-year-old nun was collecting alms outside a well-known temple in Nantou when a male volunteer directing traffic stood in front of her.
- Angry that he was blocking her donation box and putting off people who wanted to give money, she swung the box at him, then kept hitting and kicking him after he fell.
- The volunteer was hurt on his head and chest, got treated at a hospital, and filed assault charges.
- She denied hitting him, saying she only "nudged" the box toward him and that he hurt himself rolling on the ground — but security cameras showed his back was turned the whole time.
- The court noted she showed no remorse, insulted the victim in court, and had already been given a short jail term for hitting a vegetable seller with a donation box in Changhua.
Outlook: The sentence can still be appealed.
