With 100 days to go until the New Taipei City mayoral election, the Kuomintang and Democratic Progressive Party candidates have begun stepping up mobilisation, and the race is gradually heating up.

  • KMT candidate Lee Si-chuan is reported to be considering inviting incumbent mayor Hou Yu-ih to serve as chair of his campaign headquarters.
  • DPP candidate Su Chiao-hui said she was not aware of her opponent's campaign timetable or headquarters structure, but that her own pace was clear.
  • Su Chiao-hui's campaign headquarters is chaired by former president Tsai Ing-wen, and the two visited the Fude Temple in Banqiao together today to offer incense and pray for blessings.
  • President Lai Ching-te will attend the inauguration of Su Chiao-hui's campaign headquarters on 5 September, with the DPP leadership fully mobilised to support her campaign.
  • Su Chiao-hui stressed that her 36 city council candidates form a "New Taipei Team", campaigning in a positive, upbeat and energetic new-generation style.

Outlook: Over the next two months, both sides will enter an intensive rally period, with the two parties' heavyweight figures taking turns on the stump, and the New Taipei race looks set to become a national focal point.
