Hsinchu City Councilor Liu Chung-hsien Announces Re-election Bid

Aug 20, 2026

After losing the Democratic Progressive Party primary, Hsinchu City Councilor Liu Chung-hsien has announced a bid for re-election, effectively breaking with the DPP — a gamble for him personally, and bad news for the party's electoral prospects in Hsinchu City.

  • Liu announced his re-election bid on his 36th birthday, with 100 days remaining until the year-end elections.
  • He lost the DPP's primary for the East District council seat in Hsinchu City this April, and is now running outside the party's nomination process.
  • The DPP's Hsinchu City branch said it respects individual decisions, but that if he confirms his registration as a candidate in violation of party rules, the most severe penalty would be expulsion from the party.
  • He stressed his background as an engineer, and pointed to his work in office on improving traffic around the Hsinchu Science Park, as well as on East District schools and dedicated school buses.

Outlook: If he formally registers as a candidate, the DPP's vote in the East District is bound to be split, and disciplinary action will follow.
