Helicopter rescue of hiker with altitude sickness on Wangya Mountain
A hiker who fell ill high on Wangya Mountain in Nantou County was lifted out by air and taken to hospital, a good outcome in a case that could easily have gone badly.
- A male climber developed altitude sickness on Wangya Mountain in Nantou's Xinyi Township, leaving him dizzy, vomiting, and unable to walk.
- The spot was remote enough that walking him out was not an option, so a rescue call went in the day before.
- A Black Hawk helicopter from the National Airborne Service Corps flew from Ching Chuan Kang airbase early in the morning and hoisted him up.
- He was flown to a training center in Zhushan and handed over to an ambulance for the trip to hospital.
Outlook: Taiwan's summer hiking season keeps drawing climbers to high peaks, so more air rescues on remote trails are likely in the weeks ahead.
