Chen Ying Rolls Out "Taitung, Gateway to the World" Billboards; Wu Hsiu-hua Launches Women's Support Group
The race for Taitung County magistrate has entered its publicity phase, with the DPP and KMT candidates making moves on the same day — each pushing to win over voters on image and grassroots mobilisation respectively, giving the electorate a first clear signal of the two camps' strategies.
- DPP candidate Chen Ying unveiled three new billboard designs built around the slogan "Taitung, Gateway to the World," following on from her earlier "Taitung's Next Leg" campaign line.
- The three designs correspond to the East Rift Valley, the coastline and the South-Link Line, using sky, sea and sunrise to symbolise Taitung's mountains, ocean and cultural character.
- Chen Ying has placed the emphasis on "aesthetics" and on how the county positions itself, arguing that Taitung must move from being seen to actively showing itself to the world.
- KMT candidate Wu Hsiu-hua has taken the grassroots mobilisation route, launching a women's support group on the afternoon of the 21st near her campaign headquarters, with media figure Wang Chien-chiu invited as a guest speaker.
- The two approaches are markedly different: one is competing on branding and visual image, the other on organisation and turnout.
Outlook: As more support groups are set up and the billboards continue to go up, the contest between the two sides will shift from image-making towards the practical business of local organisational mobilisation.
