Waikiki high-rise residents still without power after storm outage
Hundreds of people in a 41-story Waikiki tower have gone days without power or running water, and elderly and disabled residents are effectively stuck in their apartments.
- Canterbury Place, near the Hilton Hawaiian Village, has been dark for more than two days after storm damage across the state.
- A backup generator kept elevators and water running for the first day and a half, then broke down, cutting both off.
- Residents on floors as high as the 35th are carrying food, water and pets up dark stairwells; neighbors are delivering meals to people who cannot walk down.
- People are angry that nearby hotels and buildings got power back quickly while a tower charging thousands a month in fees is still waiting.
Outlook: Building management is trying to hook up a replacement generator, but Hawaiian Electric has given no timeline for restoring power.
