Taiwan may extend Xiaohongshu block for another year

Aug 19, 2026

Taiwan's block on the Chinese social app Xiaohongshu has sharply cut scam cases, and the ban is likely to be extended another year — good news for fraud victims, bad news for the platform's Taiwanese users.

  • Scam cases tied to the app fell 80% and the money lost fell 55% since the block started.
  • Taiwan's Interior Ministry blocked the app last December over fraud and data security worries.
  • The core problem is the Shanghai parent company ignored repeated requests to send a legal representative to Taiwan.
  • The app has no office and no working phone contact in Taiwan, so police have no one to call about scam accounts.
  • Letters were sent twice through official channels before the block; the same process will run again when the year is up.

Outlook: Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang says the block will very likely be extended another year unless the company finally responds, and Taiwan would welcome talks if it does.
