Taiwan labor minister plans September trip to Shanghai for skills competition

Aug 18, 2026

Taiwan's labor minister wants to travel to Shanghai next month to support Taiwanese competitors, and Beijing has signaled it will handle the visit on its own political terms.

  • Labor Minister Hung Sun-han plans to go to Shanghai in late September for the 48th WorldSkills Competition.
  • China's Taiwan Affairs Office said any participation by "Taiwan region" personnel will be handled under the "one China principle."
  • Taiwan is sending 53 competitors across 47 skill categories, from cooking and carpentry to cybersecurity, robotics, and drones.
  • The event runs September 22–27 and is often called the Olympics of vocational skills.

Outlook: Beijing's wording leaves the minister's trip in doubt, and whether he actually gets in will be an early test of cross-strait temperature this autumn.
