Taipei's sky-high parasols come with only a 2-year warranty; DPP councillor slams Lee Si-chuan

Aug 19, 2026

A pedestrian parasol in Taipei costing NT$7.44 million comes with a warranty of only two years, at odds with the city government's earlier claim that it could last 30 years — negative news for Lee Si-chuan, who led the planning.

  • The parasol was planned under Lee Si-chuan during his term as Taipei deputy mayor and signed off on by Chiang Wan-an, yet not a single one has been built to date.
  • City government officials acknowledged during questioning in the city council that the canopy carries only a 2-year warranty and the base 5 years, with subsequent maintenance costs having to be drawn from the street-lighting budget.
  • A single parasol costs more than a 2026 Porsche sports car; officials responded that "a Porsche can't be driven for 30 years," drawing criticism that no one thinks the spending is anything but outrageous.
  • DPP councillor Cho Kuan-ting used the issue to attack Lee Si-chuan's image as an "engineering professional," questioning whether, having spent Taipei's money, he now intends to spend New Taipei residents' tax money as well.

Outlook: The gap between the parasols' budget and their warranty will be a major point of attack and defence in the short term as Lee Si-chuan runs for New Taipei mayor.
