Taipei prosecutors search Tri-Service General Hospital over false organ transplant records
Two doctors at Taiwan's Tri-Service General Hospital have been released on bail after prosecutors accused them of entering false information into the national organ donation and transplant registry — bad news for the hospital and for trust in the transplant system.
- Prosecutors searched hospital offices in Taipei and seized evidence, questioning four people.
- Two of them, a doctor surnamed Shih and another surnamed Chang, were released on bail of NT$100,000 each; the other two were let go.
- They are suspected of forging business records, a crime under Taiwan's criminal code.
- The case surfaced while prosecutors were handling an autopsy review and noticed irregular entries in the registry.
- The hospital says it is cooperating and denies outside speculation that the case involves a transplant scandal, urging people not to jump to conclusions.
Outlook: Prosecutors say the investigation is continuing and the full extent of the alleged false records is still being worked out.
