Taichung Dome construction 18% complete, target 2030
Taichung's roughly NT$10 billion domed stadium is only about a fifth built and still has no opening date, which is bad news for taxpayers and for the northern district counting on it to draw crowds.
- Construction stands at 18.38% done, with the main structure aimed at finishing in 2030.
- The nearly NT$10 billion budget only covers getting the building shell approved — interior fit-out is a separate cost, rumored at another NT$2.4 billion.
- The city is using an ROT model: government builds the shell, a private operator pays for the fittings, equipment, AI and security systems, and runs it.
- Bidding for that operator closes at the end of September, so the city says it cannot name an opening date until a winner is picked.
- Councillor Tseng Chao-jung, who backs the project, warned it risks opening as an empty shell after seven failed tenders and repeated delays already pushed costs up.
Outlook: The operator tender closing in late September is the next real test — if it draws weak interest, the fit-out bill and the opening date both slip further.
