Six passengers trapped in Kaohsiung Metro station elevator
Six people were stuck in a broken elevator at Kaohsiung's main metro station for about 90 minutes before being pulled out unhurt, and the transit operator has apologized.
- The elevator jammed between two basement levels at R11 Kaohsiung Station on Tuesday evening when its safety brake locked up.
- Repair crews could not fix it on site, so station staff pried the doors open to pass in drinking water and keep air flowing.
- A contractor eventually climbed in through a maintenance hatch and set up a ladder so the passengers could squeeze out through the gap.
- All six were shaken but not injured.
Outlook: The elevator stays shut until the cause is found, and Kaohsiung Metro says it will tighten its maintenance routine.
