Part of roof collapses inside Kaimuki Chinese restaurant

Aug 18, 2026

A section of ceiling caved in at a busy dim sum spot in Kaimuki during the lunch rush, injuring a few diners but sparing anyone from serious harm.

  • A 40-by-40 section of roof came down at Happy Days Chinese Seafood Restaurant on Waialae Avenue with about 40 customers inside.
  • The ceiling gave way gradually in the middle rather than all at once, so diners had time to get out of the way.
  • An elderly woman was taken to the hospital with cuts, and three other women were treated at the scene.
  • Five fire units and about 25 personnel responded, along with paramedics and police, snarling traffic on the street outside.

Outlook: Authorities are still investigating what caused the collapse, and the restaurant is likely to stay closed while the building is checked.
