A 75-year-old man in New Taipei's Xindian district has been charged with bribery after handing a government inspector an envelope of cash, a small case that shows Taiwan prosecutors still pursuing low-level graft.

  • Land he owned was illegally dug up by a friend, and the city fined him roughly NT$60,000 and ordered repairs.
  • When an agriculture bureau inspector came back to check the work, the owner handed over an envelope with NT$6,000, saying it was "for a cold drink."
  • The inspector turned the money in to the city's ethics office instead of keeping it.
  • The anti-corruption agency investigated and Taipei prosecutors have now formally charged him with bribing a public official.

Outlook: The case goes to court, where the man faces charges under Taiwan's anti-corruption law for paying an official to wave through an inspection.
