New album Liʻalā arrives from ʻukulele star Taimane
Hawaii ʻukulele artist Taimane is releasing a new album called Liʻalā this Friday, her first in four years, and it lands just before Halloween with a deliberately spooky, mystical mood.
- The album's name points to twilight — the hour between day and night, and the mirages and illusions that come with it.
- Songs lean into Hawaiian myth, including a track built around the night marchers.
- One piece reworks a Liliʻuokalani love song into a medley about two lovers who can't be together.
- Taimane plays a custom five-string Kamaka ʻukulele she calls Tiger Lily, which she has toured with for 11 years, from the Swiss Alps to 100-degree Montana.
- The release coincides with Kamaka ʻUkulele's 110th anniversary, the local maker she has played since age six.
Outlook: Liʻalā hits Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming services Friday, the same day she performs at the Maui Food and Wine Experience.
