A shallow quake struck northeastern Taiwan just after midnight, shaking Yilan and Hualien but with no damage reported so far.

• The magnitude 3.6 quake hit Nan'ao Township in Yilan County at 12:10 a.m.
• It was very shallow, only about 6 kilometers deep, which makes shaking feel stronger at the surface.
• The strongest shaking, intensity level 3, was felt in Nan'ao and in Heping, Hualien County.
• The epicenter sat roughly 43 kilometers south of the Yilan county government.

Outlook: Small aftershocks are possible in the same area, but a quake this size rarely causes damage.
