KMT Calls on Lai Ching-te to Step In and Break the Deadlock; DPP Counters That Han Kuo-yu Cannot Stand Aside

Aug 18, 2026

Confrontation between Taiwan's governing and opposition camps has escalated further, with the Executive Yuan and the Legislative Yuan trading accusations and the Blue and Green camps each pushing responsibility onto the other — bad news for political stability.

  • Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu criticised the Executive Yuan for repeatedly refusing to countersign bills passed by the legislature, while Premier Cho Jung-tai asked in return whether the Legislative Yuan had upheld the Constitution.
  • The KMT caucus said the person who genuinely has the power to break the deadlock is President Lai Ching-te, who cannot allow the confrontation between the executive and the legislature to worsen and then blame the legislature.
  • The DPP caucus hit back, saying Han Kuo-yu cannot enjoy the prestige of the speakership while standing aside: where power lies, so does responsibility.
  • The Constitutional Court is currently paralysed, leaving no arbiter when the executive and the legislature clash, which makes the deadlock even harder to resolve.

Outlook: With the constitutional arbitration mechanism at a standstill, there is no sign of the partisan clashes easing in the short term.
