East Maui residents cut off after Tropical Storm Lala washes away bridge

Aug 19, 2026

A small community in Nahiku on East Maui is stranded with no road access after flooding destroyed the only bridge connecting them to the outside, and the county has no fix yet.

  • Tropical Storm Lala dumped close to four feet of rain on Maui, and the floodwater tore out a wooden bridge that was the residents' only way in and out.
  • People on the far side now have no way to bring in food, water, or supplies, and older residents cannot get out at all.
  • One resident was nearly killed when the bridge gave way as he was about to cross.
  • The county says it is still trying to work out who actually owns the bridge, and admits it has no solution for spanning the 40-foot gap.
  • Residents say the bridge had been left to rot for years — they repaired it themselves in 2019 — and believe a wealthier, more populated area would have been fixed immediately.

Outlook: Residents are pushing the mayor for at least a temporary walking bridge, but with ownership unresolved, they are likely to stay cut off for a while.
