Annual Chinatown Cleanup in Honolulu this Saturday
Hundreds of volunteers are expected to spend Saturday morning cleaning up Honolulu's Chinatown, good news for the neighborhood's shops and shoppers.
- The cleanup runs Saturday morning, starting on North King Street and covering the blocks down to Aala Park.
- Volunteers will pick up trash, scrape gum, and paint over graffiti on buildings, bridges, and traffic boxes.
- The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, which has served Chinatown businesses and immigrants since 1911, is organizing it.
- Organizers still need more volunteers plus donated paint, rollers, and scrapers; sign-ups are at chinesechamber.com.
- The morning ends at Aala Park with a "Battle of the Bao" blind taste test of manapua from local bakeries.
Outlook: Past years drew more than 300 volunteers, so a similar turnout should leave Chinatown noticeably cleaner by Saturday afternoon.
