15 Indicted in Chung Lien Oil Case; Lu Shiow-yen Calls for State Accountability
The Taichung District Prosecutors Office has indicted 15 people in the Chung Lien oil case, and Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen criticised the government's handling of the tainted oil, calling it bad news for the agencies responsible for food safety.
- With the investigation into the Chung Lien oil case concluded and 15 people indicted, Lu said that anyone who violates food safety rules should face legal sanctions.
- She questioned who had signed off on the decision that "products containing less than 20% of the problem oil need not be pulled from shelves", and demanded that someone in government be held accountable.
- The indictment states that Brazilian soybeans may be the cause of the carcinogenic oil, and she called on the government to set standards and processing rules as soon as possible on whether Brazilian soybeans may be used as a raw material for edible oil.
- She also criticised the Lai administration, saying it should not assume that handing out NT$10,000 in universal cash payments allows it to do as it pleases, and that leaders should abide by the Constitution and respect the Legislative Yuan.
Outlook: Pressure is mounting to set food safety standards and processing rules, and the confrontation between the executive and the legislature looks set to continue in the near term.
