A construction worker died after falling at a housing project in Zhubei, Hsinchu County, and the county has now halted that part of the work — bad news for the builders involved and another mark against site safety standards.

• A worker fell from about four meters while working at the Fengcai 520 site and could not be revived at hospital.
• Emergency crews talked people on site through CPR by phone before taking over, but he had already lost vital signs.
• Hsinchu County fined both the developer, Fongyi Construction, and the contractor, Song Yang Construction, and ordered that portion of the site to stop work until it is fixed.
• The county gave the site one week to report back on safety improvements and referred the case to labor authorities to check for workplace safety violations.
• Fongyi called the death regrettable and said the cause is still being sorted out with its contractor.

Outlook: Work on that section stays frozen pending the safety review, and labor regulators could add penalties if they find violations.
