A rollover accident on the southbound lanes of National Highway 3 in the Tongxiao section of Miaoli in the early evening spelled bad news for commuters heading home.

• A tractor-trailer and a light truck collided at the 145-kilometre mark of the southbound lanes, after which the tractor-trailer overturned.
• The two people in the light truck climbed out on their own with lacerations and abrasions to their hands, feet and faces; they were conscious and were taken to hospital. The tractor-trailer driver declined medical transport.
• The vehicles involved blocked several lanes, causing a backup of at least 2 kilometres just as the evening rush hour began.
• Because of the size of the tractor-trailer, two large cranes were brought in to clear the scene, leaving only the inside lane open to traffic.

Outlook: The backup is expected to ease once the lanes are cleared, and the cause of the accident is still under police investigation.
