Taiwan police break up gang-linked scam ring sending workers to Cambodia
Taiwanese police have dismantled a cross-border fraud ring run by a Bamboo Union gang figure that shipped more than 100 people to Cambodia to run scam centers — bad news for the gang, and a rare win for police cooperation across Taiwan, Thailand and China.
- A gang boss surnamed Chang recruited young Taiwanese with promises of high pay, then sent them to Cambodia to pose as Chinese police and scam people in China.
- A travel agency in Yunlin, plus a linked office in Thailand, handled the flights and faked return itineraries so the recruits could slip past border checks.
- Tickets were bought with Thai credit cards, and the agency was paid in the stablecoin Tether — a common way to move scam money without banks.
- Around 46 victims lost more than NT$200 million, and police seized cash, over 10,000 Tether coins, and two luxury cars in three waves of raids.
- Twenty suspects were caught; the ringleader's handler and the travel agency boss are being held, the rest released on bail.
Outlook: Prosecutors in Yunlin will pursue organized crime and aggravated fraud charges, and pressure on Taiwan-to-Cambodia trafficking routes is likely to keep building.
