Taiwan names new envoy to Australia
Taiwan has picked its top U.S.-affairs diplomat to run its mission in Australia, a routine but telling sign of how much weight Taipei puts on ties with Canberra.
- Wang Liang-yu, who has led Taiwan's North American affairs department since 2023, takes over the top post in Canberra.
- She previously served as Taiwan's deputy representative in Washington and ran its Geneva office.
- The Canberra job had been empty since last month, when Douglas Hsu returned to Taipei for a diplomatic think-tank role.
- Taipei also named Roy Hsu as its new representative in Sydney, after David Wu moved to Fiji.
Outlook: Expect Taiwan to keep leaning on Australia as a partner while pressure from China stays high.
