Taipei mayor opens Taipei Fashion TOP design awards
Taipei's city government wrapped up its annual young-designer competition, a modest but steady boost for Taiwan's fashion industry and the students trying to break into it.
- Mayor Chiang Wan-an handed out the awards wearing an outfit made for him by last year's student gold winner.
- The contest has run 14 years and has helped more than 185 designers get noticed, some of them going on to shows in New York, London and Paris.
- This year's theme drew on everyday city life, with 10 new designers and 10 students turning out 80 outfits.
- The runway show swapped the usual catwalk for a mix of lighting, music and video.
- Top prizes went to Li Chi-an in the designer group and Chen Chih-yun in the student group.
Outlook: Taipei plans to keep running the event each year and push its winners toward international fashion weeks.
