Miaoli's Bid for a Science Experimental High School Stalls; Chung Tung-chin Pivots to an NYCU Experimental High School
Miaoli County's plan to establish a science experimental high school in the Zhunan Science Park has been blocked by the central government — bad news for local families working in the technology sector.
- The National Development Council formally replied in July that the case "remains difficult to advance at this stage," and the county government has removed it from its list of tracked items.
- The Science Park Bureau's position is that the expansion of the Zhunan Science Park should be completed first, with the school only to be discussed once the land and timetable are confirmed.
- Spillover from the Hsinchu Science Park has caused the populations of Zhunan and Toufen to surge, with many young families working at the park, leaving schools and resources stretched thin.
- County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin is instead promoting an experimental high school affiliated with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University's Miaoli campus, with the goal of enrolling students in the 2028 academic year.
Outlook: With a science park experimental high school off the table in the short term, Miaoli can only rely on the NYCU route to ease enrolment pressure for now.
