Fireworks at New Taipei's Fisherman's Wharf Obscured by Smoke; City Government Plans Riverside Viewing Areas
During questioning at the New Taipei City Council, both the viewing quality of the fireworks display at Fisherman's Wharf and the volume of social housing construction came under scrutiny — bad news for local residents and for citizens waiting for social housing.
- Fireworks set off recently at Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf became engulfed in their own smoke, diminishing the visual effect.
- With insufficient space in the area and pedestrians competing with vehicles for road space, councillors pointed to public safety concerns and suggested building a scenic platform and water dance show in the waters in front of the Hobe Arts and Leisure Park.
- Deputy Mayor Liu Ho-jan responded that the effect of fireworks depends on the weather, and that the city government has been searching for the most suitable viewing areas along the long riverbanks of Bali and Tamsui.
- Another point of contention is that the central government may scale back social housing targets, with New Taipei's originally planned 52,000 units potentially dropping to 39,000 — a shortfall of more than 10,000 units.
- Although the Tamkang Bridge has already become a new landmark, the surrounding tourism facilities and sightseeing routes still need upgrading.
Outlook: The New Taipei City Government will continue planning riverside viewing spots and will communicate with the central government about the social housing reduction, hoping that projects already under way will not be affected.
