'A Foggy Tale' named Taiwan's Oscars submission
Taiwan has picked the White Terror-era drama "A Foggy Tale" as its Oscar entry, a win for the film's team and for Taiwanese-language cinema.
- The film will represent Taiwan in the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards.
- It follows a girl traveling north to recover the body of her executed brother during Taiwan's decades of political repression.
- Directed by Chen Yu-hsun, it beat out six other domestic films, chosen for its characters and its portrait of ordinary life.
- Most of the dialogue is in Taiwanese Hokkien, and the movie was a box office hit at home with 4.4 million tickets sold.
- It already swept the Golden Horse Awards, including Best Narrative Feature, and won five Taipei Film Awards.
Outlook: The Academy Awards ceremony is set for March 2027, with nominations to be decided well before then.
