Gen Z investors are moving retirement money into sports gambling
Over half of young investors have pulled money out of stocks and put it into sports bets, which is bad news for their long-term savings.
- A new survey of US retail investors found 52% of Gen Z shifted investment money into sports wagers over the past year.
- Only a third of Gen Z said they stay out of sports betting entirely, versus about two-thirds of everyone else.
- Betting is a coin flip — injuries and bad luck decide it — while stocks and crypto at least give you earnings, dividends, and industry trends to study.
- The gap comes down to weak financial education at home and in schools; young people earning six figures often do not know what home equity is.
Outlook: Unless financial basics get taught earlier, a big slice of Gen Z will reach middle age with gambling losses where retirement savings should be.
