Rear-end collision and hit-and-run on National Freeway 5's Wuyang Elevated Road; three missing Vietnamese migrant workers intercepted by police and referred for prosecution

A rear-end collision followed by a driver abandoning the vehicle and fleeing occurred yesterday afternoon on the Wuyang Elevated Road in Taoyuan. The person responsible was a missing migrant worker, who was ultimately stopped by police and referred for prosecution.

  • A sedan driven by a Vietnamese man was following too closely and struck another sedan ahead of it, with the accident temporarily blocking the inside lane.
  • The at-fault driver and two passengers abandoned the vehicle and left the scene on foot along the inside shoulder.
  • The three then got into a white sedan and were picked up; the driver was a Vietnamese woman holding legal residency.
  • Police reviewed surveillance footage to trace them and stopped both the people and the vehicles.
  • All three responsible parties were missing migrant workers, with breathalyser readings of zero, and have been taken into custody by the National Immigration Agency's Special Operations Brigade.
