A man in Keelung, in a bad mood after drinking, went to the entrance of a bustling night market and sprayed pepper spray around indiscriminately, sending passers-by scrambling for cover. He was later fined NT$2,000 by a judge — bad news for a mess of his own making.

• The 25-year-old man, surnamed Lo, had been drinking with friends into the next day at the end of May and, after falling out with them, lost his temper in the heat of the moment.
• Holding two canisters of pepper spray, he sprayed left and right like a gunslinger on the road at the entrance of the Miaokou Night Market, sending passers-by fleeing in fright.
• After spraying, he flagged down a taxi, went home and fell fast asleep; police reviewed surveillance footage to track him down and brought him in from his home.
• He admitted to spraying indiscriminately, but said he had not targeted any particular passer-by for attack, and no one was injured.

Outlook: The Keelung District Court found that he had violated the Social Order Maintenance Act, fined him NT$2,000 and confiscated the two canisters of pepper spray, bringing the case to a close.
