Wang Hui-mei Appears Alongside Lai Ching-te and Cho Jung-tai on Changhua Inspection Tours as KMT Questions Her Support for Wei Ping-cheng

Aug 15, 2026

Changhua County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei has appeared in public alongside President Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai in succession, leaving the KMT grassroots worried that she is not firmly backing her own party's candidate for county magistrate — bad news for the pan-blue camp's electoral prospects.

  • KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen travelled south to campaign for Changhua magistrate candidate Wei Ping-cheng, but Wang Hui-mei was absent, choosing instead to appear alongside Lai Ching-te.
  • Today Wang Hui-mei again accompanied Cho Jung-tai on an inspection of a day-care centre in Yuanlin City, which the pan-blue grassroots read as a move to align herself with the ruling party.
  • On Facebook, Wang Hui-mei thanked Lai Ching-te for apologising over an earlier slip of the tongue, and pledged to ask the Executive Yuan to assist with major construction projects in Changhua.
  • Cho Jung-tai floated plans including an Erlin precision machinery industrial park and the conversion of the former Mingdao University campus into the southern branch of a national institute for traditional Chinese medicine, seeking the county government's cooperation.
  • The Wei Ping-cheng camp responded in a low-key manner, saying that Wang Hui-mei was accompanying the officials on official business and securing central government funding for the locality, which amounted to a normal itinerary.

Outlook: Whether Wang Hui-mei publicly declares her support for Wei Ping-cheng will affect both the Changhua magistrate race and the confidence of the pan-blue grassroots.
