Two West Oahu primary races tied after ballot corrections

Aug 15, 2026

Two Republican primary races on West Oahu ended in exact ties after invalid ballots were fixed, and coin flips will now decide who advances.

  • State Senator Kurt Fevella and challenger Bob McDermott are dead even, each with 1,212 votes, after starting 7 apart.
  • The Makakilo–Kapolei House race is also tied, with Sue Keohokapu-Lee Loy and her challenger each at 842 votes, erasing an earlier one-vote lead.
  • Both ties came after election officials corrected a batch of invalid ballots that had triggered automatic recounts.
  • A random draw at the State Capitol will decide each winner.

Outlook: The coin-flip winners face the general election, where the House victor runs unopposed and effectively wins the seat outright.
