Taiwan High Speed Rail to review fares in 2027

Aug 15, 2026

Taiwan's bullet train operator is looking at raising ticket prices for the first time in 20 years, which is bad news for regular riders but a sign the company is upgrading its fleet.

  • Taiwan High Speed Rail may end a 20-year price freeze once new trains start running in July 2027.
  • A fare plan could be proposed next July, with any increase starting as early as September 2028.
  • The new pricing may add flexible early-bird deals, discounts by trip purpose, and different rates for long, short, and nonstop trips.
  • The higher fares are tied to better service, as 12 new Japanese-built trains add capacity and comfort.
  • The first new trainset just arrived in Kaohsiung and will be tested through April 2027 before entering service.

Outlook: Riders should expect the first fare hike in two decades around 2028, once all the new trains are running.
