Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake off Eastern Waters; Taipei Metro Operating Normally
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the waters off eastern Taiwan. The shaking was felt more noticeably in Yilan and New Taipei, but it caused no substantial impact on transport or public transit, making it a low-impact event.
- At 7:30 p.m. on the 15th, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the waters off eastern Taiwan, with the epicentre about 53 kilometres east-southeast of the Yilan County Government.
- The earthquake had a depth of about 66 kilometres, making it a medium-to-deep earthquake, with a maximum intensity of level 3 in Yilan and New Taipei and level 2 in Taipei's Xinyi District.
- The Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation said its system was unaffected and that all lines were maintaining normal operations.
- The energy of a deep earthquake weakens as it travels, which is the main reason the shaking was felt but the damage was limited.
Outlook: In the short term, attention should be paid to whether any aftershocks occur, but judging by the current magnitude and depth, the impact on transport and daily life is limited.
